November 2009 - SIG Ministries in Action

Dear Friends,

Here are some of the things keeping us busy:

Computer Team – from VT came last Monday to help Sherrie Fausey of Christian Light Ministry to realize her dream of having a computer lab in her school, and we helped with logistics so their goals could be realized. The lab is now completed and the teachers and students were given good instruction how to use these computers in a responsible way. Thank you Josh, Ken, and Nick. Another goal was to establish opportunities for micro businesses here, and good contacts were made – thank you Norb. And thank you Pastor Neil for your leadership so that all these goals were met, and more!

LACC Ladies Seminar – this week five women, who have been missionaries here in Haiti and Latin America, are coming from the States to hold seminars for women. How to know God in a personal way, how to truly have a grateful heart while living in such desperate poverty, and how to respond/handle abuse in the home are some of the timely topics that will be taught. These seminars will be held in the north at Cap Haitian and also in Port au Prince, with approximately 500 women attending each one. Ann is helping the seminar in Port.

Cataract Surgery – the pastors of the Ft. Jacques church, who we’ve helped in the past, have several older people in their congregation who can’t see and need cataract surgery. Three of them are scheduled for surgery today, and we are able to pay the fees with humanitarian relief funds. These people who haven’t seen well for a very long time are very excited at the prospect of being able to see again!

Medical clinics – Ann continues to work in a neighborhood clinic 2 afternoons a week, with many sick children and adults coming for help. Last week she went with a medical team to a small village, far away in the rugged mountains near the Dominican Republic border, that hasn’t had medical care for several years. It was heartbreaking to see the need, and yet grateful to help in some small way. Besides medical care, reading glasses were available to those needing them, each person was prayed for, and each family received rice and beans before leaving.

Pastor Seminar – last week the pastors shared the Good News with the children in each classroom at Sherrie’s school, with the e-cubes (evangelism cubes) Karl had given them. Several of the children, responded with tears in their eyes, so happy to know they could choose Jesus as their Savior. Karl and the pastors were so excited to see these children come to faith, and Sherrie was thrilled - wonderful day indeed! Today is the last day of this seminar, and the pastors will have a short exam, receive certificates of participation, and have communion as they conclude their time together.

Church – we have not attended Quisqueya Chapel since our return in August (except for the Sunday of Appreciation for us in September), in order to enable Pastor Bobby to better establish his ministry with the congregation. We have visited several churches, Karl has preached in a few, and now we are finding ourselves at ‘home’ in a Haitian church, led by a pastor and his wife who we’ve known for several years. Though we are not fluent in Creole, we are comfortable attending and the people are very welcoming. Though it’s a big change for us, we are confident of the Lord’s leading, and would appreciate your prayers.

Prices increase – while we were in the States last summer the cost of electricity per kilowatt hour doubled and though we had paid our bill before leaving in June, we returned in August with a bill of $500 USD. This increase is absolutely ‘cast in cement’ and seems to be irreversible. Very recently gasoline and diesel prices increased, and now we get 1 gallon less for the same amount of money.

Praises:

*  for safety and good health
*  for the varied ways SIG has helped others
*  for those ‘standing in the gap’ for us

Prayer Requests:

We covet your prayers,
knowing the Lord works through prayers of His own

*  Women’s seminar;
    for the women teaching and the women listening

*  For us for His grace, peace, and guidance

*  For our financial needs

Blessings,

Karl and Ann
Port au Prince, HAITI

The name of our new ministry is SIG Ministries – Standing in the Gap – for others, based on Ezekiel 22:30. Our mailing address is still with Quisqueya Chapel who has agreed that we can continue to receive our mail through their address, therefore we hesitate to include SIG Ministries in our signature (below) because it won’t be recognized by MFI, our snail mail server.
