Greetings from Port au Prince! We have some wonderful news to share with you and trust you’ll be excited for us, because we are excited – yet awed – but very grateful for the open door God has given us to go through.

Everyone is aware of the horrific earthquake January 12 and the devastation that it brought to Haiti and her people. The clean-up process and finding a new kind of ‘normal’ will take a very long time. The people continue to struggle to find food, housing, jobs, schools for their children, and medical care. There is a lot of work to be done on many different levels, but we remain committed to do what we can to be a part of helping Haiti and her people recover.

Right after the earthquake we met people working with Convoy of Hope who were interested in distributing food to the people right away – Quisqueya Chapel became their venue and we were asked to be in charge of this project which we gladly accepted. We began 5 days after the earthquake and continued until mid-March. Then we were asked if we would distribute water filters for people to have safe and clean drinking water, and we are still doing this. Then a huge 40’ container was literally dropped in our lap and is on the Chapel property, now with food, water filters and buckets, and alot of room for more!

The container really moved us to begin praying seriously about God’s plan for us with COH - we felt like we were on the sidelines just watching God ‘do His thing’. We continued to meet other COH people (including its president/CEO), we were encouraged by their plans for Haiti, and sensed we should continue moving forward. We began to have discussions with some of them, and the international director came down to talk seriously about our becoming a part of Convoy of Hope. As we prayed we could see God’s leading, and agreed to join them as COH Field Associates - Haiti.

We never would have expected this as we began to distribute food January 17 , but God had a plan that unfolded before us. So what happens now?

New COH Container

*  Financial - we are considered missionaries to Convoy of Hope, therefore we need to keep and build our support base. We are not paid a salary or stipend, but will continue to depend on our support for our living expenses, as we’ve been doing.

*  501c3 organization - our 501c3, Berean Mission Alliance, remains the same as well as all our other contact information.

Greg Venturella / COH International Director (l)
Kevin Rose COH Field Operations / International (r)

*  Who are we working with? - we are working with Kevin and Aimee Rose, Field Operations Director, International, who live near us in our neighborhood. They are an exceptional couple, we appreciate them very much, and really enjoy working with them.

*  What about SIG Ministries - we think this is a huge expansion of SIG , more than we could have imagined. Now we will have the means and support to do far more through COH than we ever could on our own. We have people along side us and behind us to help and guide us which is beneficial to us and the work COH does here. We look forward to sharing more with you as time goes by. We are very excited about this opportunity and so grateful this door has been opened to us.

COH Team from DC – arrived Monday this week with huge hearts to help a small community in a remote part of the countryside. They are working hard to fill wire baskets with rocks and place them in a river bed to stop erosion and prevent the school/church building from collapsing into the river. Also they will distribute water filters and buckets to this community of people so they can have clean and safe water to drink and cook with. It has been a joy to work with them!

COH team hard at work

Right now – please pray for us. We have just set the dates for our furlough, June 23 – August 31. We already are committed to attend the CCCC Annual Conference (where Karl has his pastoral license) in Springfield, MA, Ann’s 50th high school reunion in GA where she will speak at a prayer breakfast, and COH conference in MO. We also will be speaking in churches and other venues, and are looking forward to sharing Haiti’s story of the earthquake and how this trauma brought about new opportunities to our work here in Haiti.

Please find attached some photos to show you COH’s stamp on our lives. Please check out their web site as well, to learn more about this organization.

*  Our need for another vehicle – COH has provided us with a brand new Landcruiser to use in our work with them – NOW we can distribute water filters, food, and in other ways, continue to help people find good ways to build and sustain their lives and their families. This certainly answers our prayer for another vehicle!!

This vehicle is an answer to your prayers!

May 22, 2010 - Update

Thought we would

send out a

short update

with some photos.

Karl with the children

*   Sixteen children have accepted Christ since the earthquake, and after good teaching by Sherrie Fausey of Sonlight Ministries, came to Quisqueya Chapel for believers baptism.

Karl helping one of the girls

It was wonderful to hear each of them confirm their faith and be baptized....a special afternoon!

Mark of the cross on a mountain
–  created by the earthquake !

*   This ‘mark of the cross’ on this mountain can be seen clearly as people travel around Port au Prince. It was not there before the earthquake – and we like to think of it as God’s hand on this small country of Haiti.

Karl teaching the women how to use the water filter

*   While having a water filter distribution recently, this lady came in the church greeting everyone she saw, and after she had received her filter and bucket greeted everyone again saying ‘mesi mesi pou ed ou’ - ‘thank you thank you for your help’....such a sweet woman.

Ann & new friend – she smiled and thanked
everyone who came with us to help give out the
water filters and buckets – wonderful lady!

*   A tin roof is only as good as the tin – and with holes it leaks during the rainy season, though making a design on the church floor

Thank you again for your prayers and support.
Thank you for being our partners in ministry here in Haiti –
Abundant Blessings To You !

May 22, 2010 - UpDate #2

We know you are really surprised to receive 2 updates back to back, but have some more recent photos to share with you.

In a recent update we told you about a Convoy of Hope team who came from the DC area, and had a photo of their work filling wire baskets with rocks to help secure the Tapico church located on the edge of a river. The team had a great time working with the people of Tapico! Here are a couple of other things they did:

*   one project was distributing water filters and buckets to the people of Tapico, a small village out in the countryside. The people were so grateful to have a filter that would give them safe and clean water to drink, and having good water is a major key to good health.

*   another distribution was literally on top of a mountain and it took about an hour + to climb up to the village of Pin de Sucre. The team walked up, the filters and buckets were taken up on horses. The people of this village have to hike down the mountain to reach the water source, then carry it up again – 2 hours of walking. At least now they can filter this water to have safe and clean water for their children and families.

Cute little girls!

Carrying rocks for wire baskets!

A lot of hard work!
Thank you again for your encouragement and prayers.

We are grateful for your being a part of all we are doing

and Bless You in Jesus’ Name.

Gratefully His,

Karl and Ann
